Parking Sensor Fault. 2006 SLK

Hi my wife's SLK bleeps for about a second and the parking sensor display lights up red when ever you come to a stop at junctions etc, even when the road in front is clear. I take it that this isn't normal, as it is most irritating. Any idea what is causing this?

Stick your ear next to each sensor as a quick check to rule out a faulty sensor , when working they make a buzzing noise up very close...

not sure if engine off..the aim is to get the sensors in their normal working state, so engine on, 1st gear engaged, would work, I suspect

Ummm and then I lie in front of the car...... I must really trust my wife lol.
