Smart + others :)
This may affect all of us soon, we are seeing massive amounts of parts going on back order, meaning none available in this country, inc mb at Milton Keynes but also not available from factory in Germany.
We had a 2011 c class which requires a rear lamp for its mot, it’s been on order for 8 weeks, so car won’t pass it’s mot.
Rear subframes, Nox sensors, adblue tanks, boost hoses, trims all back ordered I know it’s small fry with what’s going on in the world but it’s frustrating.

Same with lots of electronic items due to global chip shortages, in business I have over £300,000 of goods currently on back order, none of it toilet rolls ;-).

Had to wait 4 months for a trim piece from my usually incredibly efficient local MB parts department. They were very embarrassed but nothing they could do, which was understandable.

Interestingly in the latest Official MB Club mag there is an article about what makes a German car German. As an example( as of 2019) the A Class is cited, there being 50 component suppliers worldwide. This figure does not reflect the number of sub contractors involved. In the current weird climate, with all those suppliers involved it's amazing that anything gets built. A bit of a miracle in terms of supply chain organization.

for many parts there can be say 3 tiers of suppliers involved each with thier own contrains given the current gloabal crisis, patience.

so the lamps for eg, not made by MB, but maybe hella or bosch, the electronics maybe another, and the bulbs by another and the circuits by another and the rubber seals by another, then they have to be delivered (supply chains) and packacged by MB and undergo QC.

So imagine all these firms working reduced shifts = delays.

We are seeing it everywhere, even on supermarket shelves builders merchants.

Stay positive folks

This does seem to be a global issue at present but from what I can see it's worse in the UK.
Our local supermarket in the UK has obvious shortages as evidenced by some empty shelves yet here in France we see no evidence of shortages at all (and locals here aren't saying there's any issue).

Well the additional brexit paperwork is not helping, especially where continental trucks, who generally are paid by KLM drive face long delays in the UK and are reluctant to go to the UK now. This situation is excarberated by the huge shortage of UK HGV drivers. Its the "Perfect Storm." scenario.

R class
My R-Class has been waiting for a small loom from the air-con compressor after a belt gave way since October 21, Dealer tells me there are massive problems with hundreds of newish mercs off the road because there are no parts anywhere home or abroad.

Also seeing this with stupidly common things like brake discs and springs!!!

****** nightmare.

We have had a 212 boost hose on back order for 3 months and exhaust gasket to turbo manifold seals on a 642 "no stock anywhere"

Yes I had this with brake pads on my W251 (not available and would be 8 weeks from Germany if lucky) . Shocking that now even consumable items are no longer on shelf.

My indy also mentioned many other consumables not availble from MB.

This was 3 months back.

I’ve never been a fan of the Global Economy/just in time mentality to me security of supply is everything we have outsourced offshore to the extent of leaving the U.K. vulnerable to economic blackmail and the current inflation rise is evidence of that.
Even the German economy has become a victim of outsourcing energy supply and the temptation of cheap parts manufactured in the far East the good news is that we should see a reversal now we will have to pay more but we will begin manufacturing at home again thankfully.
I think the lesson learnt is that outsourcing globally doesn’t equate to the spread of democracy

Sounds like I was lucky when Ian did my R class - he pulled them off the shelf!

I think this is a lesson being learnt now courtesy of Russian shenanigans.
I suspect we will see increased fall out from this as time goes on.

Absolutely - the cheap living party is well and truly over from the price of bread to providing an adequate military defence

I've been waiting over four months for a gearbox component for my E220. Was told a week, then 3 weeks. Now getting told they can't give me a date and getting no info from them at all.

In Cuba, when they couldn't get parts for their American cars due to the US embargo, they broke existing cars for spares and made parts themselves. We will just have to get inventive.
