I have a 1988 300 S.L. The motor is fine, it will push the window up but isnt gripping to pull it down, apparently the window sits in a v shaped rubber within in a metal bracket. Any suggestions?

The glass in most car windows sits in U shaped chanell , lined with rubber, this is often just a tight fit or held with an impact adhisive like EVO stick, make sure it is dry, before you do it, and in the correct place, do it with the window right up to be safe.

I had this happen with another car. The glass sat in a channel which was attached to the regulator and was moved up and down to open and close the window. The glass came away from the channel. I used Isopon to glue the glass into the channel, never gave any more trouble. You probably could use silicone or if it is a rubber insert replace it.

Something has caused this to happen, so when you fix it make sure the window guide channels are clean and have no tight spots, and of course ensure alignment is OK. Silicone lube the channels too.
