I have recently had a performance exhaust installed on my car.

Sounds really nice, and looks really good- its a twin exit exhaust.

Now the only thing is, i dont know if im being paranoid but i dont feel as if its pulling quite as hard. Could this be due to it being a little bit louder?

Its on a 1990 Mercedes 500 SE. The standard exhaust system suffered with suffocation issues so ive heard.

Surely i wouldnt have lost power from a more freely breathing exhaust system would i?

If it's a more free flowing system, which I'm sure it will be, then you will have more than likely lost some torque, however, the payoff for this will be better acceleration once you're into high revs. NA engines require back pressure to maintain good torque levels but this is a balancing act so as not to reduce the outright bhp.

Turbo engines are a totally different kettle of fish, hope this sheds some light on the matter.

i saw a tv prog recently and a brand new 15k bike was given a pretty exhaust,
when they put it on a dyno it fell 5bhp less than what it came out of the factory with

only way to win is see if amg will tweek it
i wish they would do mine.

Manufacturers caught onto the performance gains from exhausts quite a few years ago. The aftermarket ones rarely make much difference now and don't even save weight anymore. However if I go back to Ducati I will be putting a Termignoni system back on just so I can wake the neighbours and set off car alarms again. Oh what fun on a Sunday morning. :D

In total agrement with you mate and with an engine the size of the V8 i would say you need the torque as the engine produces more than enough BHP.
Was it a complete system they fitted? Have they removed any exhaust boxes/silencers and replaced with straight through items?
It sounds like the nice sounding exhaust note has come at a price.

Yeah it was a complete system. With 6 silencers (freer flowing ones apparently)

Whats the best step in terms of increasing torque would you suggest? Without talking silly money/mods.

It does feel like it pulls abit better higher in the rev range as suggested. However its on part throttle where i have noticed it slightly down on how effortlessly it picked up.

Guys im taking the merc back to the chaps who installed my exhuast to try and tune it up abit.

What can they do, and what could i suggest etc?

Id have liked the exhaust a little bit louder, but they would have to take two mufflers (one from each exhaust) which i think would maybe make it silly loud? Anyway way of making it that little bit louder?

I just wanna be prepared if they try and fob me off with being lazy.

I gotta say although it doesnt feel as effortless on part throttle it does feel likes it pulling better from say 30 to 70 etc.

But i was thinking of having them maybe try and increase the torque? Would that be by increasing back pressure?
