Anyone know where i could purchase some performace cams for the 1990 500 (W126) SE?

Kent cams want to know the Drive configuration or somthing or other in order to get an idea of where to start with making some?

It makes the cars very lumpy in town having high lift cams, sure you want to.

In that case mate, no i dont... lol

Its very smooth as it only has 60k on the clock with full benz history..
Mercclassic_b.jpg

Any suggestions as to how to get the power up then? Without compromising how smooth the car is? :)

Great site by the way chaps.. Other merc sites are generally unhelpful i have found.

what a car you have there, very nice. Sadly there is very little out there to give any worthwhile gain. There never has been much for our engines.

Thanks mate.

Not even smaller pulley you think would make a worthwhile gain?

I have heard the original exhaust system on my car is 'suffocating' apparently.

Hmmm.. guess i might just leave her be then.. Shes quick for a boat, but would have been nice getting abit more out of her.

Yeah problem is the mechanic doesnt know if theres a cat or not on my one.

BUt from the merc manual it holds it back by 30bhp! So id definately de-cat it if it had a cat.

Would taking off a muffler also improve performance abit? I must admit im not too clued up on the exhuast system on our cars.

An sports exhaust could be a reasonable update, at the same time fit a K & N air filter, then at least the air flow will be better.

Take a look at your exhaust

Take a look at the order from new with the full 17 figure VIN code, it may be there.

I will try and find out. You could find your car in the first link and look there

Might be wrong here but you could check to see if you had a lambada sensor in the down pipes.

I would have thought that a hotter cam would be the ideal way to perk the car up a bit. And I would think you can push it quite a long way without making the car lumpy or undriveable. The standard engine is hardly hot!

If the car's down on compression at all - and I'm sure it is at that age - then just freshening up the top end will bring back some of the bite

If you want a cam with more lift you're going to have to make sure there's enough piston - valve clearance. The same is true if you're going to skim the heads and up the compresion ratio

I'd keep looking on various forums until you find cam information. Then contact the cam manufacturer and ask for specs. I'd start with looking for Shrick cams - it's most likely that tuning parts, if any were available, were made by German manufacturers

What engine number is it?

Engine 117965 22 028124 . Is tat wot you meant by engine number?

Is skimming the head going to give a decent gain in BHP per cost of getting it done?

I was wanting to get the most out of her with only around £1000 to throw at her. Because shes in immaculate condition and i dont plan on getting rid of her untill shes dies on me.

Hopfully with 50k on the clock that wont be for a long time!(fingers crossed).

So what do you think would be the best BHP gain per cost for my boat?:D

I had Kent "fast road cam" in the TR7s. Alleged to increase from stock 105bhp to close to 150, which in something smaller than an old mini is quite a lot.

They do not make the car lumpy. They alter the valve timing, they should not change the valve lift. However if there is any compression loss then get that fixed first, most likely valve seats. Re-grinding the valves and resetting their clearance usually restores a lot of power and flexibility to the engine.

Skimming the head results in higher compression. If it doesn't pink (detonate) there's a risk of the piston crown striking a valve with resultant low-compression con-rod. Don't do this unless you are racing the engine (it becomes an expendable item).

Just get it superchip and a custom exhaust system and new filters you will gain a little more bhp and better reaction from the car when you put your foot down

Hi,
If it was mean with a budget of a £1000 forget about cams as you will be spending £1000+ just on cams, go for a top end overhaul head skim, ehaust and air filter, i think your car is to old to benefit from remapping.
Though you will need to replace the exhaust manifolds to get any sort of sensible gain out of a new exhaust system.

Wow that is a nice looking car. Do you have any more pics we could see?

If you havent looked already, try looking at the W126 section on benzworld.org. They are always trying to squeeze more out of the M117, with good results sometimes. Helpful bunch too.

Probably worth pointing out that this post was started 5 years ago, and the OP last logged onto the forum over a year ago.

Any questions re his car - I'd drop him an email.
