Hi guys,

Quick one, what would you do?

I have noted that this wires shielding has started to perish, breaking away when you touch it.

Shall I just wrap it in some of that fabric loom tape?

I think what happened was my aux belt perished (from an oil mishap) and a bit came loose/flappy and smacked off the plastic. I never noticed it bare like below before.

Normally I'd just wrap in insulation tape or sleeve it with heat shrink plastic.

That's nothing compared to what '93 to '95 129s do:

Patented Mercedes self disintegrating wiring loom.
(And yes it was still running!)

I would use spiro wrap

Ewww. I might unplug, de pin the connector and wrap in heat shrink. Or just hand wrap in that cloth type loom tape.

I would use spiro wrap

That close to the engine? I might do as suggested above tbh.

or some split convoluted sleeving, can be bought by the meter.

That's like a bit of a convoluted solution, doesn't it, thought?

PVC insulation tape doesn't perform well in a hot oily environment and heatshrink would be too rigid and liable to go brittle and deteriorate over time, Spirowrap is by far the better option.

If you can get the wired out the plugs then heatshring all the way to keep it neat and tidy.
Heatshrink is made for wires.
Normal electrical insulation tape will peel off after a few months as the glue will dry out due the ambient temp cycles of day and night.
If you cant go heatshing - then duck tape.

I'd go with heat shrink, plus a cable tie to guide it away from hot places, if that's feasible.

Heatshrink tubing is inherently designed to provide electrical and mechanical protection in the form of abrasion protection from external sources and rigidity to protect a repaired electrical connection from vibration and movement causing stress to the repair, whether this is a soldered or clamped joint. So if any of the internal cores were damaged, I would agree that a short repair joint with Heatshrink tube protection would be the first stage of repair, but in the picture the cores look to be undamaged, the description and the damage looks to be confined to the conduit, (Shielding, in cable terms means something completely different) providing containment and protection with flexibility to the cores within, hence the reasoning behind recommendations for Spirowrap from @M80 and the Convoluted conduit from @Taffy7hfa both would meet the requirements and be fit for purpose.
You could try using duct tape, it would be a step up from some string and chewing gum? But I wouldn’t put any of that stuff on much more than ducts and floors! :D

'If' heat shrink can be passed over the plug then so can the expanding flexible tubing, the type that looks like a close woven netting.
No need for any heat, will stay flexible, comes in different materials. MB use it extensively already.
Edit-
The expandable PET sleeving here.

You are only protecting it against rubbing so some spi-wrap will be fine.

Yea I think so.

I think what happened was the aux belt had started to disintegrate and the loose part was slapping off it. New belt tensioner on the way.

Probably worth changing the idler as well - mine disintegrated, then the tensioner bearing went...

Apart from the faff of having to remove a plug to get heatshrink on, it's is too rigid for such a length. You'll just stress points where the wire exits the shrink at each end. Use Tesa tape, ie a quality harness tape.

You can buy the shielding by the meter off ebay i have had lots of it for my car ..Its split so it makes it easy to slip on the existing wires .
