Hi Guys,

Just wondering.. has anybody researched and run the number on buying a breakdown policy to cover your person versus your car(s).

I am wondering if it is far more efficient to buy personal cover for me. I have the SL and E class mainly but from time to time I will the Clio on the road too.

What are the pitfalls of a personal policy? And if a personal policy is for "any" car, why does a provider offer you the option of adding cars to the policy?

Thanks
Conor

I have breakdown cover through my bank account.
It covers me for any vehicle I'm in whether I own it or not.
Much cheaper than multiple policies to cover our 5 cars.

Interesting, thanks.

I'm in the process of getting something to cover a 30 day trip to Ireland in the SL.

I have personal cover as I’ve “too many” vehicles  to make per vehicle worthwhile

I use TopCashback and it works out around £65 for the year for roadside, relay to anywhere I want to go and onward travel. I switch between AA and RAC pretty much every year to whichever is giving the best deal.

I note since lockdown prices for breakdown cover have increased dramatically. Guess there’s a lot of flat batteries out there...

How much cover do you get? Just roadside or more?

Interesting. Does that include Euro cover?

I am trying to figure Euro cover into the mix as I will probably take at least one trip back to Ireland year and maybe another to the EU with the SL too.

Euro cover isn’t included in that. I shop around for European cover and just buy it for the trip. I did have annual Europe cover when going over 4 or 5 time’s a year but I’ve only been going once a year so it’s worked out cheaper buying it separately.

If you’re taking the SL to Southern Ireland regularly then it might be cheaper getting an annual policy

Yea I think you are correct on the above. I might tent to go single trip. I have bought an annual policy this year as I am taking the SL to Southern Ireland next month and it will also allow me a euro trip to France before this time next year.

After that I will assess. Thanks.

I like a policy that will take me where I want to go and not to a local garage that doesn’t necessarily know how to deal with my car. They are also very aware you’ll only be there once and in need of repair... prices can therefore be reflective of the situation.

I’d have my car taken home or to a specialist of my choice (depending upon which vehicle I’m in).

I got 1 year free RAC (inc Home Start) when I bought the taxi last year. I also have FMDSH so have Mobilo as well although the RAC may well attend for Mobilo cover now as well.
If I do decide to have my B service and ATF done at an indy that will be my Mobilo cover over, so will probably renew with RAC after haggling unless the AA is much cheaper. I have no allegiance to either the RAC or AA so the cheapest will do for me.

Normally get personal cover as 4 cars...

watch age of car restrictions, I’ve 2 which are now over 15 and most wont cover then.

I’ve just gone with GEM after years with AA and RAC massive fees... they seem to be recommended and £107 for me and Mrs with unlimited cars and no age restrictions.

I’ll take the euro out separately as it’s much cheaper that way on 1 car

I'm with RAC, full personal cover (home start, recovery, onward travel, accident recovery, lost keys and legal cover, everything really) costs £160 for 3 people and renewal was yesterday. I have been with RAC for over 20 years.

Interestingly will you be covered travelling at the moment? Travel insurers seem to be adopting a stance of 'no cover for covid related issues' .....sure t will be OK but just worth a quiet check

Interesting, but what would be a COVID related issue? A breakdown is a breakdown.. Actually, I did have the E class recovered a few weeks back when I got a misfire code.

Not sure a car can catch covid....;)o_O

There will be no travel restrictions to most of Europe in a few days, so despite that covering travel health insurance I’d not be worried personally

I've got full AA cover - the expensive option, though I haggled hard on the price. It does mean that any car that my wife or I are travelling in will be covered. Our youngest car is six years old. The car will be relayed to a garage of our choice & we will be taken home or to our destination, whichever best suits us.

It's peace of mind we're all buying when we get breakdown cover.

I also have full personal EU cover via my bank account which means any car I or SWMBO are travelling in. It also includes at home and relay.

As above most of the time it’s just a comfort feel but 2 weeks ago SWMBOs Renault was so flat I couldn’t even get it to start with my “jumper” toy. They got to our house in 20 minutes- incredible!

Have a full conversation in your head and then verbalise near the end... makes it confusing for "the management" even though it's perfectly clear to you... (never done that...)
