Petrol cap

Hello I`m in the middle of spraying my R170 and most of the car is covered .I noticed yesterday ,the petrol flap wasn`t closed properly, but when I tried to close it,there was a plunger sticking out,which is obviously the locking device for the flap When is this locking pin actuated to lock the cap,does the ignition have be on or the engine running . Ive only had the car for a couple of weeks so I`m still finding my way round it Len

It locks when the car locks, unlocks when it's unlocked.

It's also air operated on the 170 along with the doors
