Hi Chaps, As you know i am trying to fit a 1990 diesel (124 model)engine & gearbox into a 1992 sl 300 24v, can not use g/box from the diesel as it has flexi drive for the speedo, sl is electronic, also found out speedo would not have given true reading, tried fitting speedo from diesel into sl instrument panel, but would have to drill hole through sl printed circuit, for flexi drive. So am using sl g/box,,have taken flywheel of diesel engine, and had it machined, so torque converter from sl will fit, got it backToday perfect can now fit diesel engine to sl gearbox, had lots of help with how to fit vacuum pipes.
Will keep you all informed of progress

brian

p.s. i have 4 speed automatic gearbox from 1990 250d (124) for sale

the sl engine has already been spoken for

So have you got it all together now? Or at least, all the right bits to make it work ok?

Must be the only diesel SL around, I imagine!!!

petrol out diesel in

why? so i can use it as an everyday car - not juicy-not a boy racer-and reliability - also as i am keeping my sl-never to sell it - it suits me - and the wife says it keeps me out of the house-which suits me as she is learning the piano and sounds like les dawson.

it will Only feel underpowered on very steep long hills- will keep updating-let you know if i get done for letting too many tractors overtake me:rolleyes:

mercedes have told me that they cannot supply me with the 5 pin plug and cable that goes from the relay plug up to the back of the bulk head and the glow plug cable that goes from the instrument panel only the bulb.Apart from that i am nearly there.

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
You may experience some gear related performance problems if you use a petrol setup gearbox with a diesel engine the change speeds and ratios may differ quite markedly, also the diff ratio may be all wrong and leave you with a car that wants to rev all the time when your diesel would be best not doing resulting in lack lustre performance.

If you can fit both the transmission and final drive which are matched to the engine and vehicle.

petrol out diesel in

thank you wireman

haven't fitted the diesel engine to the gearbox yet. Have bought a donar car with prop shaft and back axle in case i need to use it. Cannot find anybody who can supply me with a 5 pin plug that goes from the glow plug relay up the nearside wing and across the bulk head. My donar car is a 3 litreD so is a 6 pin.
Many thanks for your time -will keep posted

IIRC it's a female plug. If so, you can use the 6-pin plug

If it's male, and there's no hole for the 6th pin on the relay, I'd check to see if there's a blanking plug you can remove. If not, either drill the 6th hole or remove a pin on the plug
