HI,

Lately I've been getting a petrol smell from my '89 500 SEC. The thing is that it's only noticable when you are travelling with the window or sun roof open so I can only guess it's eminating from the engine bay somewhere. There dosen't seem to be any smell when you lift the bonnet though.

Investigating things I took off the air filter housing and the pipe that runs into the underside of it, from the drivers side rocker cover, has an ammount of oil leaking from it where it attaches to the fitting underneath, there was also an oily deposit inside the air filter unit that appears to have come from that pipe.

Also, and more worryingly, I have noticed that two or three of the spark plugs seem to have oil working out around them.

Lastly, the car has been somewhat erratic in it's idling of late. When up to temperature and in neutral it seems to idle rather high, but not all of the time. Sometimes you can put it into neutral and it settles where it should, at around 650'ish rpm, other times it will idle right up around 1100rpm.

Are all these things related and if so are they indicative of anything seriously wrong? If they aren't related is any one of them a problem in it's self?

Thanks for any advice.

J.
