Hi all

Went to visit garage this morning-Saturday. After a small discussion that they have not got the time to finish it(that's what they say) i have requested that they bring the car back . As this is being towed 1 mile they are going to put ATF in the gearbox, but the gearbox is not linked up to the radiator as its not in there. My husband told them that there is 2 bar pressure and that it would pump out of the flow and return pipes. They disagree and say that as the torque converter will not be going round, it will not pump out of the flow and return. Are we wrong to think this? as we do not want oil all over our driveway:lol::lol:. Brian is going to try and finish the job himself- the garage admitted that they had taken on more than they can chew-and are too busy to complete the job within a reasonable time. Let's face it 7 months is a long time- if we leave the car there it could be another 6 months and still not completed. At the moment in 7 months they put the deisel engine in and bolted it up to the gearbox, made engine mounting brackets so the engine fits in(and had to cut a lump out of the cross member and re-inforce so the engine would sit down properly). The overall cost of the job finished was quoted £700 which i thought was cheap. How much do you think we should pay for the work done. Originally they said if they could not complete the work they would put the petrol engine back in so we could drive the car away. This however was only word of mouth - nothing in writing.
Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated. We will not lose sleep over this, it will give Brian something to do, and if all fails i have made a space in the garden for it to go, and stick a plant in the middle of it-right next to the gnome that Brian hates. Anyway you never know - my next post may be of me driving around in it. I have learned a lot about cars in the last few months and to be honest i like a challenge. Must go now as i have to inform Brian about his next project- hee hee hee.

Sorry to go on so long.

I'm not sure exactly when the rear, secondary pumps were deleted on these gearboxes - if there is a secondary pump on your gearbox, oil will be circulated when the car rolls.

If you're worried about oil coming out of the cooler pipe ends, just connect them together with a short length of flexible hose and Jubilee clips.

petrol to deisel 7 months on

Hi number cruncher

That is exactly what my husband said to them - and they said it was not necessary . Brian asked them to take prop shaft off- they said this was unecessary.

thank you

Yes, for just a mile, I wouldn't bother taking the prop off - just go at a sensible quite slow pace.

It takes 10 minutes to rig up the pipe loop, and has the added advantage of preventing contaminants getting into the system. I hope the pipe ends have been sealed off while they have been open.

petrol out deisel in 7 months on

We know that the pipes have not been sealed off while it was in the garage.
I am no expert by any means being a woman, but judging from what you have said and what i have heard Brian telling the mechanic - it seems to me that the mechanic is listening but not listening, and seems to have the attitude (i know what i'm doing so don't tell me)- i think we will just get the car back and hope that no damage is done in the process-out of our hands as we have to rely on them bringing the car back then hopefully we can make our own decision on what to do next.
thank you for your help

deisel in -in -in -petrol out

Hi all

Unfortunately the garage have said they have not got the time to finish it. Perhaps it was the price (£700) for completion of job, and they said if it didn't work they would put the petrol engine back. We requested the car back as they have had it for 7 months, in that time they have taken the petrol engine out and put the deisel engine in. I am going to take it upon myself to try and finish the job. Got fed running around for them geting, nuts, bolts, washers, having engine mounting brackets made. Everytime i went down to the garage they said it was a bad time, then said they thought they had taken on more than they could chew. In 7 months they didn't even charge the battery up. Lizzy and I are so pleased to have the car back in the driveway(even if we just look at it). I am going to carry on with the conversion, when i feel like it. I think my biggest problem will be wiring the glo plugs and relay unit for easy starting. Have already worked out how to stop it once it starts (if it starts). Will keep you informed. Would appreciate any thoughts, comments, anyone with a degree in hindsight?
