phone aerial advice wanted

Hi I have a 2003 E320 and the phone signal strengh keeps dropping out. I tested it in a low strengh area when my phone whilst in the cradle was not receiving any provider ... I removed the phone from the cradle and just laid it on top of the cradle and it received 2-3 bars???? Is the car aerial supposed to enhance the signal strengh or not? when I speak to my dealership they say no as they always say as the car is still under warranty. Is there anyway I can have the aerial checked independantly
