I recently bought my first Merc, a 2002 C180, it has buttons on the steering wheel with pictures of a telephone on them. What I would like to know is how they operate a phone and do I need a certain type of phone or any particular accessories to make them work? I have had a look in the handbook but as I have only had a state education it has not helped at all. Any info would be gratefully received.

By default the buttons don't do anything. The MB phone prewire kit was an expensive optional extra and will have come with a phone cradle somewhere. Assuming there is no cradle then it's safe to assume you don't have the prewire kit. You can get after market kits these days that will interface with some of the wheel buttons. I believe Parrott do one as well as some others. That said, I do have the prewire and to be honest I rarely bother with the wheel buttons.
Save yourself the hassle and just install a normal after market bluetooth kit.

Thanks

Thanks, there is no sign that any phone cradle has been fitted in the past so I will probably go down the route you suggest, It sounds much easier and probably cheaper. Thanks again.
