Phone kit in 2005 SLK?

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and new to MB, so please treat me gently ;)

I'm about to collect a 2005 SLK350 which has all sorts of snazzy extras like the COMAND sat nav doohicky and apparently a factory-fitted phone kit.

There's a cradle for a phone in the arm rest which apparently connects to the COMAND doodad which will allow me to make/receive calls.

This cradle will presumably take a specific type of phone (from the look of the cradle an oldish Nokia). I'm planning to buy whatever phone it is to keep in the car.

The internal space of the cradle is about the size of a mars bar and curved at the top end. At the top left corner there's a round socket and there's a flat gold tooth socket at the bottom (the flat end).

Is this a standard cradle and what phone should I acquire to make it all work?

Thanks much in advance,
DjP

Phone cradle

Hello

It sounds like the cradle is to suit a 6310i. But it is easy to check. There should be a little round button on the face of the holder, press this in and move the cradle forward at the same time. This should release it and on the back will be a list of phones that the cradle suits. I can send you a list of available cradles/phone combinations if you want to upgrade/

thanks

Thanks much for the advice. Do you supply alternative cradles? Obv I don't want to replace all the wiring, but if it's possible to bung another cradle on the end, that'd be great.

I've got a Treo 650 phone - have you got anything that will plug into?

Hello

No there is nothing listed for that phone. The idea is you only need to swap the cradle as new phones come along and the cradles are commissionedto suit. Mostly nokia and siemens. Pm me an email address and I will send you the list.

many thanks

Hi,
I'm not allowed to send you a private message for some reason, but fling me an email at david.percyatinfra.co.uk (replace at with @ - it stops *some* spam!).

The Treo thing is a bit peculiar - more of a PDA than a phone...

Thanks again,

Have a look at any MB price list and they detail the phones that they supply cradles for. The cradles simply plug in - 2sec job. I replaced mine last year when my phone disappeared. Simply looked through the MB list, bought an appropriate phone from carphone warehouse and the matching cradle from the dealer.
Cradles are £130 new though they are also on ebay. Personally I can't see the point in having 2 phones but each to their own.
As an alternative, they also do a bluetooth cradle now (my Aunt has one). There is a bluetooth standard the phone has to be up to but once matched, you get the best of both worlds. I believe the cradle is £400 though and won't charge your phone but it is at least a one off purchase and should work with most phones. Personally I like the 6230i nokia and my wife has the same phone so now I have the MB cradle for this phone, it should last me a long while.

Hi,
I whipped the cradle out and the numbers on it don't match the list I was sent and it doesn't have a list of phones on it...

This is what is says:

A 171 820 04 51
04W37
Q9
HW:0404 SW:1104
PEIKER acustic 130694 022611

Anyone any the wiser?
Cheers,
DjP

Thanks jberks, this is the same cradle ("my" part number is in the eBay ad). I sourced a Nokia 6210 today which fits into the cradel perfectly. when i put the cradle and the phone in the car the COMAND display changes from "insert telephone" to "phone is being activated, please wait" but it never gets past this message.

Obviously the car knows the phone is there (the phone is merrily charging itself), but it's not "active" and the message about it being activated stays there and never goes away.

Has anyone got a 6210 in their car (ie should it work, or do I have to go scavenging for a 6310) and has anyone seen this message before?

Thanks in advance,
DjP

it should work with both. Daft question, but does the phone work normally outside the cradle, are there numbers stored in the sim etc?

My cradle occasionally plays up and simply doesn't recognise the phone. It will often charge but wont connect. Its simply mucky contacts in my case, so the fix is to remove the phone from the cradle, remove the cradle from the car, blow the dust of the contacts, phone, base of cradle and the connections at the back of the cradle, then refit all together again.

Thanks for the reply jberks.
The phone is a new one (sourced from eBay) and works perfectly as a phone. There are no numbers in the SIM bc its the SIM from my "normal" phone and my numbers are stored in the phone, not the SIM. I was assuming I could simply dial from the car without needing to have any numbers in the SIM.

I'll try adding a number to the SIM address book and giving everything a good clean and try again.

One question: does your phone "click" when you put it in the cradle? Mine fits fine and is solid, but I'd like a more satisfying click when it goes in!

I know this is probably useless info, the 6210, 6310 and 6310i phones all work in the same cradle with the exception of the 6310i as this will only work in the later modified cradles, I can use the 6150,6210 and 6310 in mine.

Hmmm, this is interesting television. The MB part number PDF I have suggests that cradle with p/n B6 787 5822 is for use with 6210, 6310 and 6310i.

If I could find a 6310i and that didn't work either the problem would point towards the cradle / car....but for now I only have one handset to play with. Back to eBay?

The current 6210 holder has the part number B67875822 the soft ware needs to be 5.02 and above.

Thanks. Sorry for the obvious question, but what software? In the car or the phone? How do I check what version I have?

Thanks for bearing with me on this guys - I've now had the car almost 4 days, I'll stop asking the daft questions soon!

Just looked in my 6210 the code is 0503870 you could go to a phone shop and they can upgrade for £10, I had my 6150 done, they just plug it into their computer, takes 10 mins, could be that.

Thanks Malcolm, are you saying the code 0503870 relates to the s/ware version? Hwo do you find the code in the phone? I've looked through all the menus, but nothing jumps out at me...

...I really hoped it would be easier than this :)

Slip the battery off, its in the back of the phone,

don't worry too much, when I first bought mine, it was easier to sleep in the garage than to keep going down in the night to see if it was OK
