I guess we all knew, but roofless gets the prize of, errrrr, being first to spell it out!

It is a C270 cdi.
We see the broken swirl flap (or inlet port shut off flap) lodged at the entry to no.1 inlet port.
Lucky really as it is small enough to go play footsy with the inlet valve, which can become damaged in rare cases.

I hear that it is pretty much the norm for it to cause major damage on the BMW engines when it lets go!

Is this a common problem with cdi engines or a rare extreme case.

It is common for the flaps to become severely worn, and not all that unusual for one to seperate completely - as we see here.

It is certainly unusual, however, for one to get all the way to the valve and cause damage, unlike the BMW diesels.

In this case the top part of the flap is missing in action, and must have gone right through at some point, there is no sign of it in the port!

Looks like a ball bearing, damaged wheel bearing?

Almost correct, it's a bearing from an alternator belt tensioning pulley that was getting a little noisy. Sadly the part number doesn't correspond to any number on the bearing websites so a new pulley assembly is due in tomorrow.

I had the same issue with some gearbox bearings recently, had to go back to the manufacturer!
