It is a C270 cdi.
We see the broken swirl flap (or inlet port shut off flap) lodged at the entry to no.1 inlet port.
Lucky really as it is small enough to go play footsy with the inlet valve, which can become damaged in rare cases.
I hear that it is pretty much the norm for it to cause major damage on the BMW engines when it lets go!
Almost correct, it's a bearing from an alternator belt tensioning pulley that was getting a little noisy. Sadly the part number doesn't correspond to any number on the bearing websites so a new pulley assembly is due in tomorrow.
