Hi

Didn't have to change the harness,ECU or petrol tank. Just had to have the fly wheel machined by engineering company so the SL torque converter would fit the diesel one .Also had to have engine mounting brackets specially made. Had to wire in glo plug relay and rewire for alternator as plug was different. Had to make up hoses to fit SL radiator to diesel engine.Although it is up and running, still have some bits to do-like wiring the engine water temp.rev counter and fly wheel censor. Hope to have it MOT next week and then get in touch with DVLA because of engine swap. Had to cut cross member and re-inforce so diesel would fit. have to put more pics on next thread as i could only upload 5.

Mad but I like it ! Well done !

Is there a reason why you used the 5 pot? Would the 6 fit? Room for a turbo?

I wish you'd never mentioned this car, Mrs RH is going to kill me when I mention yet another project.......

:lol:reason for 5 pot -my car -as the SL is the wifes - I have 1990 124 exactly the same engine. Have had it 14 years - body work in excellent condition and engine has never caused me a problem and i get at least 45 mpg.Don't know if the 6 turbo would fit in but cannot see any reason why it would not as there is room for it. Nice to have a project-no matter how mad or hairbrain-being old and retired and need something to keep me fired up. Next project keep looking at the mobility scooter- i wonder!!!!!!!

I would have thought if it passes M.O.T. this should be good enough to say it's safe & road worthy for the Insurance& DVLA.

Last time I tried to register an engine change the DVLA wanted a receipt proving the purchase of the engine which i didnt have as it was a cash job from the scrapyard. They wouldnt do it without it. Mind you that was around 1975. In the end I just changed the engine number over, it was the same size anyway - just didnt have the hole where the conrod had exited......

i would hope thats the case but some insurance co are by the book or by the pc & this is when it gets hard if you try to do it online when you get to the point when the engine size is needed your stuck as it will only list the factory options :(but some are better than others so get a few quotes it might take some time & loads of phone calls to get it done but it's worth it :D

I am happy to admit that you took the engine out of one of my cars when it was in Tesco car park:D;)

Re the insurance thing. You DEFINATELY need a UK based company as any one with the currently popular Indian Call Centre location will not have a clue.

Just changing to a private plate with NU had them cancel my policy part way through, start me a new one at an increase of about 25% and it took AGES to get it sorted with nasty letters to head office. I will NEVER use a company with overseas call centres again even if it costs a few quid more
