I have a 2 litre W124 which has failed MOT because of high CO emmissions (should be 0.6 % actually shows 7 or 8%). It still runs OK with the exception of the engine hunting when hot and higher than expected fuel consumption. I have been unable to find sufficient details of this carburettor such as exploded diagrams, descriptions etc, to try and sort this out. A friend with access to Mercedes parts CD tells me that it says that the pierburg is "NOT ADJUSTABLE FOR EMISSIONS OR MIXTURE" which seems a bit strange. Since it was once within limits, it must be possible to bring it back by replacing parts ( Which Parts??) or making some form of adjustment.I have, in the past fixed SUs, Webers, Zeniths and numerous outboard carbs be replacing diaphragms , cleaning or replacing jets or needles or repalcing worn spindle bushes. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I guess you've checked the air filter isn't dirty?..........a blocked air filter would enrich the mixture and cause a higher fuel consumption

Thanks for your replies. TV. The logbook says only Mercedes W124 2 litre petrol 1987. Panason, I have already taken out the air filter element to see if it improved things, it looked clean and didn't seem to make much difference.
I have put in a bid for the Haynes manual and hope that I'm successful. I must have a look and see iof haynes still publish it.

The emissions are adjustable. Look at the bottom of the carb, you see a wire going to a terminal and a largish round thing held on by a 22mm nut? Slacken the nut and turn slightly by hand. Only turn little by little till the engine ticks over smoothly.

Right on the button Ian. Fiddled with the adjustment as suggested and the kangaroo petrol syndrome and other strange symptons have disappeared, with the car running generally much smoother than previously. Just need to get someone to check out the CO levels b4 next CT (French MOT).

Although I have no experience of your vehicle ,its age would dictate it may benefit from some playing around with the ignition timing to optimize emissions and power output.

I have had Rover SD1 v8's of late 1980 vintage (years ago mid 90's and on) and of course they were designed to run 5 star fuel which was better quality than the rubbish we get today, suffice to say setting ignition timing static on one of my engines see it run ok but tick over on 5 or 6 cylinders instead of 8,so you may see good results if either you run the premium fuels or alter ignition timing to suit fuel octane used.
