I am taking my W129 to KHM near Stuttgart in May to have the soft top replaced.

Does anyone know of good places to stay for a couple of nights while they are fitting the top.

Or places to avoid, even:)

It goes without saying that we intend to visit the MB Museum.

Only ever used the usual hotel chains when I stayed there (Best Western, Meridien, etc) so no particular recommendation; much the same the world over

If you want to try traditional Swabian cuisine while you're there, then Trollinger (Rotebühlstraße 50 70178 Stuttgart) is worth a shot. Was recommended by a local and food is quite good if you like steaks, etc. Beef Tea is the local dish (meat-stuffed noodles in a beef soup). Vegetarians will find limited choices :) The restaurant is near a village hall with a little lake around it and turtles swimming around. Strange but nice.....

The memsahib and I stayed as follows last September:

Hotel Hansa,
Silberburgstr 114-116,
70176 Stuttgart
Ph: 49 711 6567800
Email: info@hansa-stuttgart.de
(Check-in after 1200)

They do discounts for Internet bookings.

Not great, but not bad. There's a cracking good Italian restaurant just around the corner, however. It's a fairly quiet part of town.

Seven minutes walk to the S-Bahn, less if you stride it out then 4 stops to the Gottlieb Daimler Stadion station, and another 10 minutes walk to the MB Museum.

You know when people do factory collection, there is a team at MB Milton Keynes who make all the arrangements and they put us up at some very nice hotels and sent us to an excellent restaurant. Worth asking them maybe. Via the Milton Keynes number but I can't recall the name of their department. Your dealer should know or the operator at MB.

on your way back

depending on how much of a rush you are in, we can recommend through the black forest as a way home.
Fairly quiet and very scenic roads, and some lovely picturesque towns and villages. Just head for Strasbourg from Stuttgart and avoid the motorways and there you are.
Lots of hotels and restaurants, you can pretty much take pot luck.

Great tip, Myros. We intend to head that way to visit my famous forebear's (Emile Galle) museum at Nancy. The last time we were passing through it was closed even though the website said it would be open:-x

Mind you, the in car nag-ivation likes Moselle wines so we might end up going that way.

I am thinking about LPG for my car and wondered what your experience was.

Does LPG still exclude your use of Channel Tunnel ?????????

Is the LPG shown on DVLC records ????????

Does it affect insurance costs ????????

Did you have it fitted to your car ???? If, what type did you go for ??????

What are the snags if any ?????

Thanks in anticipation.

Digression about LPG

The SL320 is the second Merc I have had converted to run on LPG and I am very happy with the conversion.

The conversion was done by EGC (Midlands) Ltd just south of Birmingham. They fitted a system is by Prins, a Dutch company, which is very good.

I did suffer a broken wire controling one of the injectors but this was fixed for free even though it was 18 months after they did the conversion.

As far as I know, LPG powered vehicles are still barred from the Channel Tunnel. I checked prices last night and was quoted £44 return for the ferry and £129 return for the chunnel so I didn't bother to research further.

A big issue with LPG is where to put the tank. I have a donut shaped tank instead of a spare wheel and it only holds about 30 litres of fuel. This has never been a problem for us even when touring in Europe.

My previous Merc was a C200 and I had an 80 litre tank in the boot. It had an Italian Landi system which was reliable but gave very poor control at small throttle openings. Driving on snow meant switching to petrol because of this.

I recently renewed my insurance via GoCopare.com and they have a screen for modifications that includes LPG. Some insures back off but most offer cover without any extra premium.

Fuel consumption is slightly worse than on petrol but on a pence per mile basis the SL320 costs the same as my wife's Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel.

Hope this helps

Richard
