Can the plastic body panels along the lower part of the body sides of W124's etc be recoloured? The earlier ones did not match the metal paintwork colour which looks OK in some combinations, but really naff in others. Can they be painted?

W124 lower body panels

They can be painted - no problem. Original replacements were supplied pre-painted but new parts now need painting. No problem at all for a competent bodyshop

The original spec used a slightly matt version of the same or a complementary colour. You set the degree of matt by adding matting agent to the paint. You can spot a less-than-professional respray on the panels & bumpers - they're glossy because the painter didn't know (or care) about the matting agent

When I did my own. As Bolide says quite a process, its a 2k paint mix and done as follows.

Plastic primer

Base coat mixed with, 10% flexi agent, thin with 2k base coat thinners, then add curing agent..

Top coat mixed with 12% matting agent, 10% flexi agent, thin with top coat thinners, add curing agent.
I think it cost me £135 for the paint some 15 years ago.
these panels do come off very easy though some coachworks prefer to do them on the car.
