Doesnt sound normal to me, can you identify which area of the engine the noise is coming from, ie front, back, middle, top etc. A model and year might also help. Can you see the tensioner pulley on the belt?, is it hopping about?

1998 E300 turbo diesel 152k never missed a service almost one owner from new, specialist maintained with genuine parts only, it's a minter. The noise is from the inlet manifold area (middle top). Smooths out with revs.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
I think you need to remove the black engine cover and look again.

The engine sounds perfect to me except for the usual top end rattle usually from the hydraulic cam followers. Try mobile 1 0W-40 protection formula oil, it fixed it for me.

So just to confirm: are we going with noisy cam followers?

The oil is expensive but I think worth it, winns injector cleaner is only a few pounds, might be worth trying it first. I use it every 5K miles now and it does make a difference in performance and engine smoothness.

But your engine sounds good especially with the mileage, sounds as good as mine. Have you listened to another 300TD?

No Dougjoy I haven't. If you listen to the first clip it starts off slightly intermittent, this also true of the second clip. Would this indicate cam follower- sounds probable. Do you have sound clip to compare? It would be most appreciated.
