Polly belt age cracks

i have been advised that my polly belt needs replacing soon as it has age cracks in it? Anyhow, MB want £70 to do this........... I have asked how much they are from MB and they are £25 inc vat. Is this an easy thing to change?

I don't see a problem doing it yourself, just note the route before hand.

You'll probably need to unclip the fan shroud for clearance.

You'll need to adjust the tensioner or move the alternator. I'm sure that someone will post exactly how to do it.

At £70+VAT its taking your dealer about 20 mins or less to change it.

Did mine last week on the 200E with minimum fuss. no need to remove the fan or shroud in my case (far too much bother) and can be looped over the fan blades easily enough.

Attached is thumbnail of old belt. I only changed it as Malcolm mentioned it could be noisy due to hardening through age. much quieter now. Have a go at doing it yourself, if you have the right tools and can find the release bolt and tensioner.

there's a boss on the tensioner which fits a17mm bi-hex socket....just under the lower run of the belt.

release the tension, slip off the belt, then realise you've forgotten the routing for the new one.
