Poly V belt trouble

Just broken another belt tensioner for the fan belt. (104 engine). What I don't inderstand is when tightening it I think you move the pointer to the pointy end of the triangle and then tighten until the pointer moves to the base of the triangle. After moving about 3/4 of the way the adjuster broke. The bolt to the tensioning pully was unscrewed to alow movement.

What am I doing wrong?? Spares are so £$% expensive in Australia....
