Hi I hope sombody can help me!

I was having a couple of problems on my 1996 c200 Manual. The first problem was sluggish performance and occasional power loss, this was rectified by replacing the Air flow Meter, the car now runs like a dream. The second problem is very bad fuel economy i thought this was to do with the first problem but unfortunately i am still experiencing the bad fuel economy. I mostly use the car around town, I am getting around 40 - 45 miles for every £10 of unleaded fuel. Before the problem arose i was getting around 60 - 65 miles for every £10 of unleaded.

I hope someone can help as this is hurting my pocket!!!

Thanks in Advance

This car will eat fuel if the ignition system is not kept up to date you need to spend to save ,update the ignition leads put in the best plugs change the rotor and cap use only MB parts this will cost initially but you will see the savings over the years you keep the car honest ,change the fuel filter and air filter the savings will take time to filter through but they will come eventually cheers eds.....

Many Thanks for the replies chaps.

I did change the fuel filter and airfilter at my last service around 5 months ago, would i need to change the fuel/air filter so soon after my last one?

Also i forgot to mention sometimes the acceleration is slightly hesitant on initial take off, otherwise as i said earlier the car drive like a dream. do you think this slight hesitation is somthing to do with the heavy fuel consumption i am experiencing?

Thanks

no it`s a fly by wire throttle in other words its computer driven and somtimes it requires a reset you do this by diconnecting the battery making sure you have the radio codes of course hope this helps eds.....

Did you by any chance get the fault codes cleared on you car because if you haven?t the car will automatically be tuned to run with the faulty air flow meter from the old unit. It will need to be reset using diagnostic equipment and all codes cleared

Problem solved!!....long story but im sure you will have laugh at my expence

I took my c200 to another mechanic, this time to a merc specialist, slightly more expensive than the original mechanic but cheaper than a 'Stealership', as i was having doubts about the competence of my original mechanic. He done all the diagnostics and after a few hours he gives me a ring and tells me what the problem is.........basically my original mechanic had replaced my Air Mass filter with one for a DIESEL, can you beleive it !!!. I had been charged around £250 by my original mechanic to change the air mass and he sticks a DIESEL one in there which incidently only costs £52.56 + VAT !!!

The specialist charged me £90 to do the diagnostics and to get to the bottom of this sorry caper. A grand total of around £350 and i have still got a car which is sucking to much juice!!!

So i take my car back to the original mechanic and let him know in no uncertain terms of the situation. It turns out that he had outsourced the 'Job' to another mechanic who had done the work!!.

I said..

"i dont give a S**t who done the work just get it sorted"

Eventually i get my car back, its now running better than ever. I have full tanked it to see what sort of MPG im getting, so far the signs are good!!.

Guys, please pray for me that this is the end of a very sorry saga & that i get the MPG that i deserve :) !!

The moral of story is alway take your merc to a specialist, not to some back street grease monkey (which is what i did  ) just to save a few quid!

Thanks for all the advice
