I have a c200 K 2001 plate, I am only getting about 17-19mpg in the car around town. It is an automatic, but I don't really put my foot down that much. is the mpg the norm?

stop-start traffic sounds reasonable to me - would improve drastically if you can keep 30mph+ up for any period of time.
I get 33+ out of my E on a motorway but have seen as low as 13 going home uphill in a traffic jam.

you dont say which town - but if you mean stop/start rush hour driving then sadly this could be reasonable.
I only really use my car to and from work - a 2 litre Mondeo petrol - and get around 20 - 22. If my wife uses it for her journey to work, which is motorway, she gets mid 30's. On a gentle motorway run it does 40+ - double the town driving figure. She has a 230SLK and get low 30's for her journey to work, but I get sub 20 if I use it.

Bottom line sitting in traffice is expensive.

I only ever use standard unleaded, although after recent posts on here I am going to give super a try. The question about which town is to do with volume of traffic. I am in Manchester and I thought we suffered, but I just spent a few days working in West London and couldnt beleive how bad the traffic was - I am sure that that would produce results even worse than I am used to.

Manchester is bad. I travel the 53 miles from my home to my exit on the M60 every day. I can see 36+ on the computer. But by the time I have finished the remaining 3 miles, that call fall back to 32.

If you want better m.p.g. use your speed limiter in town and your cruise control on the open road. Not only do you save money on fuel but also brake pads and speeding tickets!! It takes some getting use to, particularly the cruise control, but is well worth it in the end.
