New to Mercs and Diesels I have been experiencing the following and would appreciate any thoughts on the matter-

On cold mornings fuel drains out of the plastic pipes adjacent to the fuel filter which means the car must be cranked continually until the pump re primes and draws fuel back into the system. I have-
replaced all plastic pipes and O seals
Replaced Pre Filter O seal
Replaced seal on Fuel filter securing bolt
Replaced Rubber Hoses

I suspect the solenoid attached to the fuel pump body is suspect as fuel seeps (not drips!) from here when cold- the pipe underneath plus the 2 above are new MB parts. Before I replace the solenoid Has anybody else experienced this on a 300 td?

Many thanks:confused:

hi jaguarjohn, i have the same car, i had this problem. i fitted a rubber bulb hand sqeeze pump into the fuel supply line , this quickly sucks the fuel up and saves the battery. etc. get some pipe and clips and locate the squeeze bulb just infront of the nearside top of the front damper suspension housing. i very cold weather any air leaks on the neg, side of the fuel pump will suck air, my cure for the problem was the fibre washers on the back of the fuel pump. replacing the air inlet manifold is the most difficult bit, trying to fit the small stainless steel clamp on the exhaust bypass pipe. best of luck. herbiemercman.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
The solenoid of which you speak is the fuel cutoff valve. It is secured to the pump by 2 torx bolts. Undo these (use a mirror to see), and the unit will pull away. There is a fat tube into the pump, the o-ring is on that tube.

Get a new o-ring from the dealer, and it should solve the problem. Please bear in mind that when you pull the shutoff valve away, the old o-ring may be weak and brittle; you don't want anything falling inside the pump.
