Morning all,

Please can anyone advise - I have never owned a Mercedes but have always wanted one. I have seen a silver Mercedes C Class Coupe C220 diesel AMG Line premium plus. It has full Mercedes service history and has done 40k with 3 owners. It has the auto gearbox/pano roof and looks in mint condition. It comes with a 12 month warranty/breakdown.

Would this be a decent buy? What are the potential issues moving forward? Servicing costs etc. I will not be putting big miles on it but I have always liked the look of these and this looks like a great example to me.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Hello and welcome

First question these days is “why do you need a diesel”

If it’s Euro 5 you’ll get stung in the wallet if you want to go anywhere. If it’s Euro 6 you’ll get stung in the wallet every time the engine warning light comes on (often…)

Thanks for the advice. Diesel due to when I do travel in it, they will be longer journeys. Engine warning lights are common on this model?? What are the reasons for them coming on or is it faulty sensors?

I'm covering ~15K pa in my V6 petrol and getting ~31mpg

The OM651 diesel engine can be pretty good as long as it's well maintained - timing chain can be an issue but not usually before ~100K miles - plenty of threads on here about it.

40K miles - gearbox ATF should just have been changed - the gearboxes are very good generally - just change the ATF ~37.5K miles are you'll be good

Hello and welcome

Petrol is the way to go at present......H2o in the future
You're not gaining much with a diesel car once you weigh up the costs compared to petrol and if you say you are not going to do much mileage except on a holiday it works out not much dearer driving the petrol car.
I have 3 diesels and 7 petrol cars and save up t0 £10 on a long journey with diesel, then there is the low emissions zone etc and it has worked out the same.
However the choice is yours Simon each to there own plus if we were all the same it would be a boring place ;)

I’d go with petrol unless you do 10-15k miles a year, modern diesels especially EU6 are overly complicated IMO and can be expensive to repair, the inclusion of ADBLUE in EU6 diesels was the last straw for me and I won’t be buying another

Thanks for the responses - I am literally trying to make a decision. Never bought a 7 year old car with 40k on so I am worried about costs if things go wrong. I will use an independent merc garage so that will help. It seems a great deal and they have knocked money off etc. It has just had a B service in April - does that mean an A service next year and then alternate each year between A & B services??? Thanks

Gearbox ATF should of been done in 2020 as the interval is 5 years or 77,500 miles .

If it has Full Mercedes Service history can I take it as that will have been done by them?

The engine in that car is a pretty reliable unit and very good on fuel consumption as long as you keep on top of it and keep it well maintained. The only down side is that they are a little clattery on tick over apart from that there will be very little to worry about :)
