Hi I think I've had a near miss today.

  • I advertised for a part in our classifieds section and was contacted by a member who's not been on the forum very long (Sept 2020)
  • They recommended the following e mail "comichael464@gmail.com"
  • I sent a list of parts via e mail with a list of parts, they claimed they were in California.
  • They provided prices to which I replied they were too expensive and the price dropped by $300 !!
  • I googled comichael464@gmail.com e mail address, the results from other forums make interesting reading!!!
Perhaps I should have googled the e mail first... insight is a wonderful thing.

Needless to say I politely withdrew from the communication, however this person could be genuine, but my mantra is, "if something is too good to be true it is probably not" .

What is disconcerting is, the recommendation came from a "new member", so could a moderator contact me and I will provide full details.

Another worrying detail is:-
How to raise an alert on our forum?
Perhaps we can introduce a simple system for members to report suspicious activity?

By which a moderator can assist to prevent potential fraudulent activities on our forum?
Or how to contact a moderator or someone with the autonomy to deal with this sort of thing.

I tried a MB forum search, no result, I checked the forum drop down list, again nothing on how to warn other forum users.

Hope this is of use.

That email appears on quite a lot of forum wanted pages from clothes to vehicles.
Hopefully they will be filtered out by now.

I think most forums will become paid membership soon as scammers are on the increase everywhere.

Thanks for the heads up - any one of us could be interested in sourcing something at any time!

Thanks everyone,
I do not and did not know who was a moderator nor how to contact a moderator hence the post to all.
I've pm'd drmw this evening with full details of this occurrence, I hope a satisfactory resolution will ensue.

If we all please remain vigilant, share any information to prevent a fraud or harm occurring to each or any one of us then that can only be good.

Not sure what has happened, but I did not get any email from you so can't do anything - if you can resend, I will try to do something!

Thanks for bringing this up. Unfortunately "would like to buy" adverts have become a scammers paradise recently. Some forums have become riddled with scammers and buy the seller has become a necessary mantra. Fortunately you saw through it, but sadly a lot won't and will lose a fortune. Well played!

That one is now handled, but for you own sake, please make sure that any such "Wanted" type threads are scrupulously checked out - there are a lot of very clever people about.
