My Mercedes 250 Auto (1975) has recently developed a groaning sound which appears to be coming from the steering wheel. I checked the power steering fluid which seemed to be a bit low and have no idea about what to replace it with. I would very much appreciate any advice on this. I've been told that Castrol TQ Type A, Suffix A would be OK

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

.... thanks for that Guy - you're obviously the man to talk to. Maybe someone as helpful as yourself would like to know that the auto transmission fluid for this model is being phased out by Castrol. Any ideas.......

The people at Castrol told me that TQ type A was being phased out - in fact they actually tried to find somewhere that still supplied it - without any luck. They then told me that I can only use a more recent variant, called something like Castrol TQ Dexron II and then - only for topping up. I only started the hunt after being told that I should *not* just use any fluid. I know absolutely nothing about cars/mercs and am simply curious about all this after having spent ages trying to get a straight answer. Maybe I'm the victim of some big practical joke thought up by bored Castrol employees.

But then again - I also spoke to a Merc mechanic who started this whole search off in the first place.

all a bit confusing.......

You can use any make of TQF fluid .Thats like telling you that you can only use a certain oil in your engine. As long as it is a good quality fluid Go for it ............

Hi Tony
The manual states that you should only use SPECIFIED TYPE of oil to top up & further states that the specified type is M-B LENKGETRIEBEUL,
(000 989 88 03) available from M-B SERVICE DEPT STORES.
I,ve always used AUTO-TRANS oil myself ,but to each his own!.
Regards, Barnie

Any manual will recomend a certain oil . does that mean you can only run a merc on uniroyal tyres they fit them on the car when manufactured ..Idont think so Give the guy a break and dont confuse him ANY DECENT TQF FLUID WILL DO YOUR CAR.

Hi Tony
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont recall you asking for a BREAK, I understood that your request was for information on the CORRECT oil to use in your power steering system, & that I believe I gave you!! So what is this Nutter" landover" going on about??? rabbiting on about giving you a break & Uniroyal Tyres, One gets the feeling that he thinks he runs the site & anybody else's opinion is not worth a toss "poor sod"

Hey all,
Thanks very much for taking the time to help me out and in order to offer a closing remark on what feels like a potentially acrimonious exchange - I thought I might cheer you all up. After listening to your advice and going out, getting hold of the Transmission fluid I poured it into..... yes.... the brake fluid container!

that's close enough.

You may want to try the thing that's about the size of a baked bean can, with a wing nut on top!

If you were addressing ANTHONYD why did you not PM him because I understand if you put it on the forum It?s for all to see I use ATF for my power steering have done so in all my cars with no problems.
These manuals list I quote [Mercedes Benz Lenkgetriebeol] partNo0009898803 only. The question I would like to ask is why.
