I have recently purchased a 1996 C200 Auto.

When turning left there is a groaning noise that appears to be coming from the front left of the car. However, the noise does not occur when turning right.

Any help gratefully received.

You may already have checked this but I've noticed that a badly worn brake pad on a disk makes a noise when turning one way or another but not both ways. Also my pump is a bit noisy and is noisy left and right.

Mike.

Not sure of the set up of the steering on your vehicle but it probably makes use of a slave pivot on the right hand side of the vehicle. If you look and the linkages you will not that the steering box has a link which transfers the direction under the engine to what I call the pivot arm for want of a better word. From their the other tracrod end will go to the wheel. The pivot arm will be fixed to the frame but must be allowed to swing freely. You will probably see a big bolt which will need greasing.
