hi all have done a search on this and know my car has a tandem pump it has self leveling as well, so one reservoir for power steering and suspension. fluid ok, no air in system, no leaks found.

1998 E300TD

the difficulty is when the car is warm the steering for a split second becomes harder to turn (slightly grater effort)mainly on roundabouts at standstill it will turn wheels lock to lock effortlessly, so it could be the pump/hoses/rack, would the steering box cause any of the faults mentioned and what are the common faults with a steering box.

regards tox

anyone know how many filters there are on the power steering side ..is it just the one in the reservoir.

It does not have a steering box. just a rack.

I suspect the rack is the culprit, but all of the suspension joints need to be checked for any seized components.

Hi and many thanks, has the car got speed sensitive steering as i can not replicate any of the symptoms again, the car has been driving well, my mechanic is going to look under the car of the usual suspect, is it worth changing the rack as i should imagine it's a costly job, one more point is the car safe to drive ....thanks very much Black

Well checked tyre pressures each one was different should be 29 front 32 back 31 29 front 36 33 in back :confused: did them again all OK, did the lock to lock with the wheels and power steering top off to eliminate air in the system all OK up to now, possible another glitch.:)
