Power Steering Question

About 2 weeks ago my W124 Coupe started making horrible noises from the steering. I deduced the PAS pump was deaded.
About a week ago the noise stopped and the steering seemingly is back to normal. Should I be concerned????!

There is also a little more play in the steering wheel than I would expect.

How do you answer this, could the relief valve have stuck for a time, cant be anything broken as it cant fix itself.
To measure the play, engine running,wheels straight ahead.
