I had been in the habit of filling my W202 with cheap (read Tesco) petrol and occasionally a tank of premium (Shell).

I've noticed that my fuel consumption on a run and around town is pretty dismal - 18-20 around town and a best of 27 on a run. I usually run the car under or at 3000 on a trip which equates to around 70 MPH.

On Ollie's recommendation my car has been run for the last 3000 on Shell premium only and my town mileage is up to 20-22 and my distance up to 30.

My car runs so much better on the 'good stuff' so I run that all the time now - it's almost the equivelent to switching the gearbox from E to S, running like a raped ape on the S setting.

There's a couple of steep hills on my way to work that I am in a low gear and whereas it would labour (ever-so-slightly) before - now it revs cleanly whilst pulling.

Ollie mentioned that the car would retard the ignition on the sh*tty stuff and hinder horsepower - whilst premium would release some gee-gee's.

Works for me.

I also notice I seem to get slightly better miles out of Shell premium --also the Sainsburys pumps have this option--both are of course a few pence more than the regular unleaded though?

The Shell garage up past the Fleetsbridge Tesco is cheeper than tesco for a better grade of fuel, i try to go there when time permits as i use upto 3 tanks a week!

Hi,
I found exactly the same as you but with my C230K 1997, changed it after reading the inside of the fuel filler that the car was meant to be used with Super + unleaded, though it still gets a tank full Tesco's own occasionally, and i can honestly say with a change of fuel grade together with a K&N filter element (added later), I have increased my fuel consumption by approx. 10%, and no I have,nt knackered my MAF because of the K&N oil.

V-Power and other premium grade fuels

Hi All

I have run my 2000 C230K on V-Power and its premium grade predecessor for a number of years and I wouldn't revert to cheap fuel. Apart from better performance and smoother running, I also believe the fuel system benefits from the cleaner fuel as does the engine.

Premium fuels are 'liquid maintenance' and the engine will remain cleaner, require less maintenance and therefore last longer.

I also achieve a 10 percent improvement in economy over the cheaper fuels. Town driving returns a consistent 25mpg and longer journeys will return anywhere between 30 - 38mpg. I even think 40mpg might be possible.

REGARDS

Phil

CL500, 2 x Honda Prelude 2.2VTEC, Honda VFR400 (Bike) ... that's about enough, need to skim
Have you guys tried Tesco99? the CL sounds different - as for mpg, i'm mostly in 30-40mph zones so never got more than 18 (even 15 sometimes if stuck in traffic too long) - lpg!!
