Hi put on a private plate on the SL on Friday,
I took the relevant paper work to Theale DVLA nr Reading
and it was all completed in just over an hour including
getting there and back.

Lucky you. MB dealer took 3 weeks to transfer my plate, using their local DVLA office.

Easier doing it yourself.. Just take your docs to the local DVLA office and its done then and there..

Why is it easier? So far as I am aware someone from the dealership took the papers in by hand.

It's what I did. Just took the right paperwork in and they assigned it then and there. Went home, phoned insurance to sort new regulations and put plates on the car. Full process from leaving house to putting new plates on was probably just over an hour!

Why your dealer can't do it that easily I really don't know...

My response was in relation to the Ipswich delay noted elsewhere, you and I seem to have the same view.

Very easy if you go yourself, but sadly this is all changing with the closing of DVLA offices

The previous owner of my E55 wanted to keep his plate, but could see I wanted the car so filled in the paperwork, gave me back £200 and trusted me to sort it out.

I sent the papers and cheque off to DVLAin Swansea on the 9th Jul and haven't heard a peep since. I also enclosed the V5 change of ownership doc', so I'm expecting a new MOT, tax disc and V5 in the new reg shortly. Takes a while though:confused:

If your putting a plate on from a retention certificate then a local office can do it there and then, if its coming off a car and onto another then it has to be sent off to swansea, why I don't know it just does and yeah it's a pain in the arse.

My local DVLA office has been brilliant, unfortunately they are closing local offices nationwide, October 13th 2013 if my memory serves me correct, so yet again, premium rate phone lines or 2nd class web service will be taking over face to face customer service. :(

It was the new number plate on the car when I was flashed at 101 mph that got me off, they could not work it all out, so they dropped the case

I am surprised you did not go to the Chelmsford office William, when I transferred my plate it was all done within 30 minutes while waiting there.
