I am looking for a conv. E300 or 320(W124), and have found one: E320 94.

I have heard that this engine; 6-inline-twin camshaft can be quite expensive to service and especially if something happens with camshaft/cylinder head.
(Camshaft has been a weakness on 230E W124 at around 100k miles, it sometimes need replacing.)
Does anybody know of problem areas I should check?

(Being the happy owner of one 230E and then one 230 CE, both W124 for 11 yrs. They have both been good, though I had to change camshaft at one time, which seems to be a weakness of the 230E W124 engine.
Therefore buying another MB I would like to continue my happy, (mainly)trouble free ownership :) )

Hi

On the whole the 320 are great. Suffer a little from head gasket leaking engine oil. Front crankshaft seal. The camshaft are completely different from the 230, you shouldn't have any problem with them at all. On the injection. Then the air mass sensor can go occasionaly. The catalysts very very occasionally. Although we have change a couple last year.

Good luck

Thanks Andy,
for your advice. Seems that the 6-inline 320E mainly is more than sound. This is the kind of info (neg. or positive) I was looking for

I have heard that it is a nightmare with the very wide and heavy cylinderhead (with the two camshafts) to service. But this might be on the obviously very few occasions,
when you need to do something with the cyl. head, which requires removal.

Anyone else?

thanks,
