I have purchased a new radio to replace the original MB Exquisit cassette/radio

It has what I am led to believe is a ISO socket to plug in the wiring loom, as shown here:

My problem is that the exisitng (fitted) radio has an extra plug at the top with a single brown wire to it. As shown here:

Can anyone tell me what the extra brown wire is for? It has been suggested that it is for the GALA system, or for controls on the wheel - I have neither.

Will I need some form of adaptor ?

Many thanks

i removed an original mercedes radio/casette from my c220 2 years ago and it too had that connector on the back, i ended up figuring out what each wire was by looking at the radio's manual (which came with the car)

once done, i cut off the original mercedes connector and connected up the standard ones you can get in any technical/radio shop nowadays,

and then i connected up my brand new sony mp3 player, worked just fine.

i did end up with two wires not being re-connected one was for the powered arial (which is ok cos mine is not powered) and the other was for ... i forget.

so, long story short, do you have the radio manual ? the specs should be in it, or post the model number of the radio here and i'm sure we can find the wires specs

cheers

Thanks.

I do not have the manual - it was one of the documents which disappeared at the auction.

The model number is CQ-LP1420L

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is another problem, in that the radio will turn on but seems to turn itself off again after 30 seconds. It has been suggested that the wiring for the power may be incorrect. Could this be right ?

I have contacted the supplier of the radio, and whilst they have replied to my emails they have not been able to offer much help.

Thank you

here's some help

CQ-LP1420L
Exquisit

Panasonic Radio / Cassette as fitted to a wide range of Mercedes Vehicles.

Please note that code entry is only possible when the display shows "CODE". If the display shows " WAIT " then the unit may be codelocked. If this is the case, leave it switched on for up to two hours and a further attempt at code entry should be possible. We are able to decode and reset this radio if you send it to us.

To remove the Radio, you will need the special removal keys. Once the removal tools are inserted, push in until a click is felt, and then withdraw the radio. The leads can then simply be unplugged.

Removal Tools Required : PC5-132

If you intend replacing this Stereo with an Aftermarket one, you may need the following:

PC5-27 ISO to DIN Aerial Adaptor Lead

Accessories Available for this Radio:

PC3-08 Power Cord / Repair Loom Assembly

We can supply a compatable CD Changer for this model.

I have had this response from 'Dave' of DND Services Ltd & Torbay Car Stereo, who were not the vendors of the radio in question, but were mentioned by Anyweb (above). It appears as though the extra wire is redundant - but, I am still curious as to what it is used for with the factory-fit unit.

"In your case, then answer is simple, the top block on the Merc does not work with aftermarket radios, and can therefore be discarded. Plug your new ISO connector directly onto the lower part of the Merc plug and all will be well. The other parts of the Merc plug conform to the standard ISO connections as your new radio, so there will be no wiring issues whatsoever."

i think the wire is connected to the reostat in the instrument panel, and as you dim the panel, it would dim the mercedes radio also,

just my guess,

cheers
