Problem with Assyst

I have read a couple of old posts that refer to the service indicator on the A Class counting down 2 days at a time. I bought a 2001 A170 this year and this is happening to my service indicator. It was last serviced in Sept 05 and has done 8000 miles (carefully driven) since then. I have spoken to the service department but without any satisfactory explanation, just been told that it needs a service! Can anyone tell me if this is a fault and is therefore counting down incorrectly and if a part needs replacing, Perhaps anyone that has had this problem would be good enough to tell me what happened in their case.
