Problem with GLC

In winter when the weather turns colder, when I turn my GLC on full wheel lock and slowly reverse, the steering shudders as the car moves and makes knocking noise from front wheels. The service department have said it's due to the tyres and the tread on them and to prevent the problem I should change the tyres to 'all weather tyres' If this is a fact, then why have Mercedes put inappropriate tyres on from new? I struggle to believe that this is the cause of the problem.
Any help will be really appreciated.

It’s a “feature” of right hand drive 4 wherl drive Mercedes in that they crab badly when cold and on full luck.

Mercedes’ fix is all season tyres...

It’s a well known problem that seems to affect the GLC particularly badly. For some, like me, it’s a minor inconvenience in cold westher but, for others, it can be a major problem. Seems to vary car to car or tyre to tyre but larger wheeel sizes and lower profile tyres tend to be worse.

There is a revised steering knuckle that Mercedes will fit at their expense if you complain loud enough.

If you search “GLC crabbing” on Google you will find pages but these two threads, on another forum, whilst very long, make good reading:

Merc fitted a set of Vredestein (sp?) all weathers at their expense. Cured it. And they’re very good tyres.

Please put up a few pictures of just one of the front tyres for me. The picture should show
1. The brand of the tyres, and the type
2. The shoulder of the tyre, which is the area where the wall of the tyre meets the flat of the tyre
Thank you

Thanks for your response. I'll test this out with my dealership, but I don't think they will be as generous as yours.

This is a feature of every Mercedes I’ve owned, Apart from the R class although that has always had all season tyres, on mine they have done it forwards or backwards. Really noticeable in multi storey car parks when wet, I put it down to the caster angles which also tends to wear the edges on the front tyres, also a feature of all the Merc’s I’ve owned.

Thank you for responding. I've taken it up with Mercedes Customer Support who contacted my local dealer. They have made a number of excuses, now saying they won't assist further because of tyre wear and age of car. (Two and a half years old with 16,000 miles)

I'm getting the same thing exactly with my'68 GLC

The Dunlops are so scrubbed on the outer edge I'm having to look for a replacement set after just 16K miles

AS far as getting All Weather tyres fitted everyone you ask is saying you cant fit All Weather as its an SUV - which sounds complete bollox to me. Try finding anyone that will sell them in the 285/40Z R20 size I have on the rears!

When I learned of this potential issue before O bought the car I went to lengths to discuss with the dealer. They told me the factory had fitted a revised linkage on the steering and that this should fix it - well it didn't, or were they lying to me about mine having already having the new link?

The car is in for a recall on Monday I'll wait and see them tell me I need to replace the tyres then ask why?

Thanks for the reply.
Sounds like your situation is exactly the same as mine.
I've done 16k and my front tyres are scrubbing as well.

I've taking it up with Mercedes customer service, who contacted my dealer, who have said they've replaced the front knuckle and are not prepared to do anything else.

Interesting what you say about difficulty in replacing the tyres to All weather when the dealers have told me that's what's needed to correct the
problem.

If that's the case though, why weren't all weather put on in the first place?

Paul

All weathers were a free option when new if the first owner did not tick the box they came with summers

Mine is a 2018 and has no crabbing issues at all, on summers or all seasons tyre size is 255 /45 r20 on all 4

Mine is on just over 15k, front tyres are fine with no uneven wear. I get a little crabbing on cold days when the tyres are still cold but nothing significant. It seems to vary so much from car to car.

Do the textures of the road surface differ from a county to county..?

GLC 43 Coupe 2021
I have GLC 43 Coupe 2021 - fitted with factory 21 inch wheels.
The tyres that came standard from factory were ContiSportContact 5P . front - 255/40/R21 & rear - 285/35/R21
I live in the North Island of New Zealand - it doesn't get that cold in winter. the tyres we crabbing from day one , we were very disappointed .
we mentioned to MB dealership , and they weren't interested saying that it was normal.
The vehicle is now 12 months old with 9500kms on the clock and the front tyres are completely worn out.
It was due for its 12 month service and again highlighted this crabbing issue and abnormal premature tyre wear.
MB Dealership advised that MB has recommended a different tyre - ContiSportContact 5 (not 5P) . It cost me $2000 for 2 x front tyres.
I was also advised to put in a minimum of 40psi all round.
MB weren't interested to covering under warranty. So far these tyres appear to have eliminated (or masked) the problem . However I am still skeptical about the tyre wear.
This was the first MB we had purchased and it will be the last. In-fact I have been looking to trade in on a Jaguar F-Pace SVR V8. If I'm going to be spending $2000 every year on front tyres after 9500kms , I'd rather spend another $2000 on fuel with a 5L V8 that doesn't wear tyres and sounds great.

Disappointed first time Mercedes owner...

I have a 2021 GLC that has 20 inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport SUV tyres, I very occasionally experience a gentle vibration but really nothing that would worry me and it is always so far been whilst reversing.

This is my first SUV so I cannot comment if this is usual.
