Hi my spare key doesnt appear to activate the locks remotely but works ok
manually. The other key works fine. I have replaced the batteries and done a re-sync as per the hand book. Does this mean that the key is U/S, or is there anything else I could possibbly try. (The car is a SLK230 Yr2000)
Any info will be appreciated.
Many Thanks
Ian

Sorry just realised I placed this in the wrong place

You could open the key and look for any dry joints,, I can check this for you FOC if you care to post it to me.

The last 2 keys that I checked were sending the IR and RF signals but had drifted out of spec and could not be fixed.

One never knows

Thanks malcom I may take you up on that.

How to Program Mercedes Remote Keys

The transponder chip inside the key must be synchronized to the cars
immobiliser (for starting car) to proceed with these steps.

1. Place transmitter key in ignition lock and turn to position 2

2. Extract transmitter key from ignition lock

3. Within 10 seconds:
press (close) pushbutton, hold and simultaneously press (open)
pushbutton five times one after the other release pushbuttons and then
press one of the two pushbuttons once

It may also be necessary to synchronize a transmitter key if the
battery in the transmitter key has been replaced. Johnny

If it a two buttons fob as in my 2001 slk then it uses RF not infra-red. Normally re-sync may make it works. Make sure the batteries are at least 3V. If after re-sync does not work try again.

I made the mistake of putting in my old battery when changing batteries and took it to Merc dealer, I ended up buying inflated price batteries from them, lucky they didn't charge me for the service. Make sure they are good quality batteries like Panasonic, Varta and not the cheap Eveready.
