was looking unser the bonnet the other day with the engine running and noticed a rather loud rhythmic click

traced this to one of the heater solenoids - noise continued with thumb wheels in hot or cold position but stopped when fan was swithed off

is this normal ???

What sort of clicking? Was it fan speed? A bit more info might help.

The clicking is from one of the 2 heater solenoids - you can feel it when you put your hand on it. The clicking only starts when the heater blower is on in any position. When the blowere is turned off, the clicking stops. The position of the temperature thumb wheel makes no difference.

The click is obviously the solenoid working or trying to work but should it be doing this ???

Does your vehicle have an internal temperature sensor? Could this be the pulsing used to modulate the temperature input into the cabin? Other than that I am afraid I can't help further
