Left the car for two weeks untouched - yesterday the cars started whining at me, and would nor respond to the electronic locking system .
Opened the car with the key, battery flat as a pancake .. charged it up and everything is OK except...

ABS/ESP warning light is now on, telling me to take it to the "Workshop"
Is there something which needs resetting when the battery is absolutely dead?

Yes you need to reset the ESP sensor by turning the steering fully lock to lock. You will also have to reset the electric windows by holding the switch down in the closed position for at least 1 second each switch. There is also a reset for the electric seats and sunroof if fitted.

If the battery is the original I would think about changing it. All sorts of spurious electrical problems stsrt to occur when the battery is undercurrent and is past its best.

Problems, Problems with w210 yr 2000

Original battery went bust about 3 weeks ago - down to 8.5 volts overnight, so carefully put small 12 volt battery across the terminals whilst the old was changed for new.
Having left the car for 10 days the battery was so low that even the clock stopped working.
Your fixes have sorted out the problems and saved a visit to the stealership!
Thanks
methinks there is a device somewhere which is draining the battery - could it be a faulty blocking diode on the alternator

You will find that the battery is faulty, many in house batteries like Halfords are of no use, I got through 3 in 2 months, changed to Exide no problems since in 3 years. If you alternater was faulty it would not charge and there are no blocking diodes as such fitted.
The reason your ABS light came on was that your new battery was below 12v

What type of battery did you fit. I bit the bullet and paid out for a BOSCH at £80 from Euro Car Parts. Inferior products can be prone to problems

Do not go for a battery larger than the one the car was designed for. It will never be fully charged. A fully charged normal battery is much more efficient than a parcially charged big one.

Problems problems W210 yr 2000

I bought a good battery Bosch which was rated for the E320 and has a 3 yr warranty.
That said it was smaller in length by about 40mm, as compared with the original MB lump, which did not have an amp hour rating so do not know if the new Bosch is exactly the same rating.
Something is clearly draining the battery ( apart from the alarm system), and am now looking for lights in glove compartment which dont switch off...
P.S. Has anybody actually proved that the light at the back of the fridge goes off when the door is closed?

I am not sure if the little people go to Hants, apart from that, the only way is to put an ampmeter in series with battery, it is important to join the meter up before disconnecting battery as fault could correct its self with the break in circuit. If you would like more details, just ask.

You've probably bought a lower rated battery. The one you want is the 100Ah type which accounts for its extra length. If your not fitting the right battery the discharge during starting will kill the battery, especially in this weather turning over a 320 diesel.

Sorry Malcolm, that does not happen.

The Bosch battery is the correct type. I queried this with the supplier who looked up the part number and it is for the E320 Petrol. The MB battery it replaced almost looked like 2 x 6 volt batteries joined together - the strangest battery I have ever seen!

Dogsbody,
I think the MB battery you describe taking out is the heavy duty 100Ah unit (massive thing), mine is fitted with the same. To check whether your car was fitted with a high capacity unit when built put your VIN into the russian website, or look at the back of your service book for code 673.
