I know this is neither the time nor the place to be talking about these busses....but.....

My wife has a 2005 Jeep Cherokee CRD auto, and ever since new has had an intermittent problem with the gearbox when cold - either jumping out of gear when stationary or failing to select a gear when moved from park to drive. Its been back to the dealer 3 times now and each time they have fobbed her off with some excuse. I am going with her on Saturday when she drops it off again so trying to get some ammunition - already seen on honest johns website that there 'seems to be a problem with autoboxes', does anyone have any other info or good places to look?

I am secretly hoping she will decide to play hard ball and get her money back - last time it was in the garage they gave her a brand new ML320 CD, and we both fell in love with it, would look much nicer on the drive next to the SL!

Thanks for any help!

Pete

Pop into http://www.birtydastards.co.uk and ask there, we have a friendly ex Jeep mech and a lot of guys that know Jeeps inside and out. It's where I get all my info on mine from.

:( In 2003 I bought a brand new 4.7 Grand Cherokee Overland, within 1000 miles the rear axle was rebuilt,by 2000 miles the back axle was whining and the autobox was making a racket. All along the customer service was appalling. Finally after many stressful visits to the garage they agreed to swap it for a brand new CRD.Guess what?????.........the axles started to whine again:x :x both cars spent more time in the dealers garage than they did in mine. The noise from the axles used to give me a headache within minutes of driving the car:( In the end I had to threaten to blokade the garage unless i got a full refund,I eventually got one and I vowed never to set foot in a Jeep dealership again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now own a Citroen Multispace HDI which in my opinion is a better car than the Jeeps ever were and I have a 500 SEL which I use when the sun comes out!:)

PS The CRD was very noisey, the Citroen is very quiet.

Ahh, now you see, I vowed never to touch a citroen again after my brothers xantia decided that it didn't need it's handbrake on anymore and wandered off down the road :)

Then there was the handbrake on the front wheels too

All horses for courses.... the Dana axles on a jeep need to be run in (under 55 mph, no towing and light pull aways for the first 500 miles) they should have an oil change after this as well and be checked over but because of all the pressure nowadays to remove a lot of the checks and open up the service intervals, it's nto always done properly. I've just put a locker into the front axle and changed the R&P on both ends to fit 33" tyres on my wrangler, Speedo now reads 70 as I am doing ~50 - 55 so I need to fix that, but everything I bought for the diffs says about "Running it in" for 500 miles makes the world of difference.

Makes interesting reading for the reasons behind the running in.

Crysler also have a nasty habit of putting D35s in the rears which are not really strong enough IMHO

Horses for courses but aside from the interior light having a mind of its own (fixed on the 2nd attempt) our Cherokee CRD has been totally trouble free - to the point where we forgot to get it serviced last year. Ok it sounds and drives like a truck so I still prefer my E, but that's why she loves it.
All the agricultural feel and mud plugging ability but with heated leather seats, aircon, cruise control and all the other toys.
Then again, ours has one of those big pudding sticks for changing gear!.
