Hello everybody!
I'm new to this forum, my name is Anton, 23, from Croatia.
Now, let's talk about real stuff ;)
Recently I purchased 2 Mercedes, W126 500 SE '85., and W123 230S.
I'm planning to put this V8 engine in W123, all is in plan, but money is issue for know...
But, another thing I wanted to ask you guys, can someone tell me something more ( really, much more ), about problems with timing chain on M117 engines?I mean, can valves hit pistons when they're full open, and piston is in TDC?
I read some problems about plastic parts, or something like that?
My engine is working nicely, for now, valves are not noisy nor the chain. It has 303 000 km on it.
Transmission, I don't know in what condition is it, but when i purchased it, it had no oil...So, I'm hoping it will work.
Now, W123 is generally OK, but it has pretty job with body ( rust, repaint, etc... ).
Thanks in advance if you guys know something more, about M117 chain issue....
Best regards, Anton

Hi Anton,

I did'nt understand the post from roundlet either.
How is Croatia, I'm off to Metlika (Slovenia) next month for the wine festival and may go over the border again, (usually on the Kolpa river).

Croatia is beautiful as always ;)
If you were on Adriatic sea ( croatian side offcourse ), you know what I'm tlaking about ;)

There are a couple of members who have transplanted engines, pls have a search on the forums.

Thanks, I did already...
My main question is about timing chain, I already examined all this for transplant...Hope to start soon, but first I have to do bodywork on W123...

spent some time at Piran myself, looking at Croatia

and very nice it looked across the bay.
The 117s can drop their timing chain tensioners. This means that lots of bits of plastic drop into the sump and can get sucked up into the oilways and do all kinds of damage. It makes me go cold just thinking about it. Best bet is change the tensioners at every 120,000kms. If you don't know whether this has been done, do it anyway. You are half-way there with the engine out of the car already.

Good luck.

If you do not know the history of the engine it would be a very good idea to replace the chain, all 3 upper guides, chain tensioner and the also clean/replace the oil feed pipe. It wont cost that much for the parts and is great insurance for your new investment. HTH

If you have not run the engine , it would be sad to have to take it apart, you could of coarse take off the timing cover, then the tensioner, and see how much slack you have by setting the crankshaft on TDC and checking the valve timing. If all ok it will only cost you the gaskit.
