I have noticed a vibration when accelerating above 60mph, which seems to go away the moment I back off the throttle.

I also have a 'clunk' and lunge when engaging drive (not reverse), but only when the car has warmed up, not first thing in the morning.

This leads me to think that I have a propshaft problem, either with rubber couplers, u/j or centre bearing/support.  I noticed that the previous owner had a 'hardy' joint replaced, which I believe is the rubber coupler, however I don't know which one (front or rear).

Anyone got any clues based on the symptoms?  And anyone know the part numbers for the rubber flex couplers, as I intend to replace those as a precaution anyway.

Thanks,

Richard

Ignore those vibrations at your peril!!!!!!!!!

On my w124 the prop shaft started vibrating, and then the coupling let go later that day. The bolts sheared and sounded like a bullet going off.

Anyway its usually the front coupling that goes first and apparantly the rear can last up to 50k miles longer.

I would replace both while i was at it, and also check the state of the centre bearing and uv joint.

The rubber flex couplers are fun, there are a number of different types fitted to the same model of car, and they depend on the hole spacing, if you look at your prop shaft, the front and rear halves will have coloured bands painted on, and these will help identify the propshaft and what size coupling is needed, if you choose to speak to a breakers/merc specialist

If you have your chassis number, i think MB will be able to get the right combination for your car from their records.

It cost me about £200 to get the parts from a breakers and fitted at a local garage. I think MB were quoting £400 + fitting and vat.

I had to replace the centre bearing and the UV joint, hence it was a complete unit i needed which was why it cost so much, i know if it was just the flex disks it wouldve been much cheaper.
