We have used this forum for some time now, and have found it to be both interesting and beneficial. However, try as we might we cannot seem to work out the meaning of the references to W203, W201 etc! Believe us when we tell you that we have tried for so long to work this out, and this is the last resort! C'mon...who would want to admit to this in a public forum?! So please can someone put us out of our misery! :Oops

Hi.
I'm certainly no expert and I leave those much more knowledgeable to come in with finer details, but these codes refer to chassis/body types. If you go here, there's a list you may find interesting; http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/models/?lng=eng
Also, if you enter your own Mercedes vehicle VIN number you should get details of its spec. as it left the factory!
Cheers, Tom

That's useful!

The W198 looks great

Couldn't see the 202 or R171. I notice they all begin with W.

Puzzled?...not Now!

Tom,
Thanx for the speedy response. Got the hang of it now! No sure what the 'w' stands for, but having visited the website you kindly linked, we now understand!
Just to prove it.....ours is a 2001 C220 CDI Elegance W203! I so hope we got that right!!!
You're absolutely right...a very interesting site indeed! Are you aware of any other ways of tracing the history of your merc?
Out of curiosity...do you know what the 'w' stands for?
This is our first Mercedes, and we're just catching on to all the 'jargon', although you probably guessed that!
Anyway...thanks for the reply. We do appreciate it.

W = Wagon (saloon)
C = Coupe
R = Roadster
S = eState (somthing German I expect)

eg:
R129 = roadster SL (soft top)
W203 = saloon C class
C140 = Coupe S class

but they make the current C class in Coupe, saloon, and estate, so the 203 can be W,S or C 203...

Your Mercedes
E320 2001 / CLS 320 2007 / SLK 280 2006
Wxxx is the chassis number and then you need the engine number too and that specifies the car. The "E-class CDi 220" bit is redundant. I think.

So does that mean my '98 C class estate is a S202?

the first 4 digits of your vin number after the letters tells you what your car is.

ie. the latest SLK would look AAAR171 ETC.

the previous verions would look AAAR170 ETC.

if your vin is displayed on your windscreen near the left wipers you will be able to tell what model your car is.

I amused the slaes people today, at a merc dealer as I looked for this to see if it was true. it is. they thought i was nuts.....I know I am.
