I have a 2002 CLK55 and have just lost the left audio channel completely. Is this an amplifier fault or are there fuses I should look at?

Thanks in advance

Are there only 2 channels within this system? or is there a 4 channel system there?
If it's just 2 channels and the left side has gone it could be a number of things. Obviously Malcom's suggestion is the first thing to try. then its time to start taking things to bits. you'll have to gain advice on how to take thins apart from somewhere else but i can tell you about the technical side of things. the speakers will have an impedance, this may be 4ohms, but may be something else, either way, both sides will be the same. So, if you can get to the back of the unit/amplifier where the speakers are (somehow) plugged in, then with a multimeter, measure the resistance between + and - of the right hand channel. This is not the same as the impedance but will give a reading that you should ideally see on the other side. if the other side reads 0 or close to there is a short circuit, if it reads 1 there is an open circuit. a short circuit will hopefully send the amplifier channel into some form of protect mode, or if it doesn't have one, could damage the amp, an open circuit could be a wire that has broken. A speaker driver that has failed can also bring up either of these faults so it doesn't eliminate this.

Swap the amp channels over so the left speaker is plugged into the right and right into left, if the fault remains the same then the amplifier is fine, if the fault changes side then the amplifier channel or something before it is at fault.

Another point to check.

If you generally have your fade set so that front to back bias is set to the front. You could have a blown speaker/broken speaker wire at the door hinge. I tend to find that I don't really notice those little tweeters in the dash, just the door mounted speakers.

If all of the plugs etc and speakers are ok the the output chip will have gone down in the head unit, its a straight forward repair
