Not sure if all models have this but my CLK320 has a speed limiter in addition to the cruise control.

My question is - I know the limiter prevents the car going any faster then the speed set into it at the time even if the throttle pedal is pressed down but am i risking flooding the engine etc by pressing to hard? What is it doing to actually limit the speed?

No, You are not causing any flooding or any other harm by pressing further on the peddle.

The engine's 'fly by wire' electronics is what controls the throttle.

When you are using the speed limiter if you put your foot to the floor the electronics will allow full engine power until the selected maximum speed is reached when the system will then electronically only allow enough throttle to maintain that speed regardless of any further pressing of the accelerater peddle (unless in the case of an emergency you press the peddle hard to the floor and operate the 'kickdown', the system will then dis-engage and allow the car to accelerate.

With the speed limiter engaged at lower speeds, say, 30mph when going downhill the car will tend to overrun and speed up. The speed limit control compensates by downshifting the auto box. Is this detrimental to the clutch packs in the auto or do the electronics match engine and road speeds to provide a smooth change?

What I am really asking is does frequent use of the speed limiter around town reduce the life of the auto clutch packs?

Unless you live in a very hilly area it shouldn't have to downshift that often. I tend to help mine by applying the brake as whilst the idea of downshifting is good and it will stop it running away, on a steep incline its struggles to keep the speed down, and ends up revving the hell out of the engine.
I use the speed limiter to 'limit' the speed, rather than to drive for me, so I still keep an eye on the speed and drive as I would without it, just safe in the knowledge that I can pass the gatsos whilst actually watching the road, rather than constantly checking the speedo as all other drivers have to.
