question for television

First time on the forum and malcom seems to be the man to ask.
Ive just bought a 2001 220 CDI, the fuel guage was reading three quarter full all the time at switch on. As per WIS I disconected battery for 15 min,when I connected back up there was a strong spark and no reading at fuel guage no indicators or wipers.MB dealer says new rear sam unit needed can disconecting battery cause this or was there a short in the unit the sam seems to consist of relays and fuses do all have to be replaced or is there a way to find the fault.

This is a little unusual, sadly I do not have the time till next week to look into it.
