S Class
Greetings. BMW owner here looking to change into a nice S Class, not sure which model yet but looking for the smoothest most comfortable ride possible. I realise this is a highly subjective subject but looking for some feedback on the most comfortable and quietest tyres with a soft compliant sidewall. Not concerned with grip, wear, cost, looks etc, Im focused on achieving a true magic carpet ride at slow speeds on poor roads. Recommendations welcome. I'm not a massive wheel, low profile tyre merchant !

Thanks. Buster.

I would guess that 18” wheels or less on the S class will be an excellent ride regardless of tyre make

Having tried a few makes on 968's, S203, S204 and SLK over the years, my choice for "summer" tyres would be Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymmetrics, with Michelin XClimates as an all weather alternative if available in the correct size. Falken 452's were also pretty good, but I'll never again fit Contis (from my 968 and S203 days) or Hankooks (my SLK).

Being someone with a hearing loss tyre noise has never been an issue for me.
I have had three MB's with 18" wheels the E class was bearable for ride comfort. The SLK was most uncomfortable, & the SLC not much better.
I have winter/all season 17" wheels for all three & the ride is so much smoother.

Used to have a C63...
Goodyear, Dunlop, Uniroyal... or Cooper (from experience of three sets on two different vehicles)... would be my first look for smooth, quiet ride. (With the bonus that traction, steering & braking aren't compromised!)

I have recently had the Falken 452’s fitted to my E class and I must admit they are a lot quieter and smoother than the Continentals they replaced ..

In my experience just about anything is quieter and smoother than contis! I fitted a set to my 968 coupe on the recommendation of the local ATS amnager 9who was a good friend of a good friend), they were awful!

Quietness has always been the Goodyear Eagle F1's for me as well. They just also happen to be amazing and consistent performers upto 2mm of tread.

I also run the Michelin PS4's which, set the new performance benchmark a while back. The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asym 5, now has stiffer side walls but feels like its predecessor, in that its sublime and smooth, with the best straight ahead steering feedback. It's also been the best tyre I've experienced for not being degraded by repeated heat cycles. The Michelin PS4 is noticeably noisier (tested on the same car, back to back with the same speed and load rating and pressures) but, when pushed to the limit and beyond, it just fractionally nudges ahead of the Eagle Asym 5 in outright grip wet and dry and its faster steering than the Goodyear, so better suited to the outright hooligan.

Despite being in the trade and testing many of these, the Goodyear Eagle F1 has always been my overall favourite.

As mentioned, the smaller wheel size will play the biggest part in outright comfort.

About 5 years ago I replaced my Conti's on the SLK200K with Falken's. Much cheaper but only lasted about 70% of the milage the Conti's did. No problem with ride or grip.

When I put Contis on my 968 coupe rear (can't remember what they replaced, probably original fit Japanese brand, think they were Yokohamas) the ride hardened and, despite running them at the recommended pressure, the centre of the tyre wore out rather quickly. Replaced them with Goodyears and things improved dramatically.

The S class does a really good job of insulating the interior from radial tyre noise anyway. Look for 18-19” wheels and go for the best wet grip you can find. Remember, you’re buying a 2.5 ton, 5.3m long car.

You will only find Magic Carpet Ride on certain of the S class by the way, it wasn’t introduced until 20-6 iirc.

I had GY Asym 3 and I always thought they were a great tyre. Although, they were quite noisy on certain road types. I think they’ve improved this with the Asym 5. Now running PS4 all around and they’re fab. For mileage, think I’d of got more out of the Goodyear’s though.

I still reckon with the S class soundproofing you won’t hear a difference in sound on new tyres of different makes

Having used Dunlop Sport Maxx and Goodyear F1 assy5 I can recommend both of these. I think the Dunlop pip the Goodyear in quiet comfort, and the other way round for over all performance.

If you can find them in the sizes you want, the Dunlop or Goodyear efficient/eco/blue range are also very quiet and compliant, which I think is because they manage light sidewalls which gives you the 'eco', but lack of stiffness compromises handling to a degree, although wet braking on them is still excellent. Might not be available in S-class sizes though.

Hi Buster, welcome to the forum :) I have Nexens which were on the C200 when I bought it. I was dead against them initially but after time I found that they did all that I wanted from them and more importantly they are quiet. The car has now done 14,000 miles and they show hardly any wear at all so don't discount the 'middle of the road' tyre just to confuse you even more :D

Put the tyre size into black circles and you will see the dB rating amongst others properties.

On my w220, I have had pirelli p zero and Dunlop sport max.
Pzero too hard and noisy.

the difference is day and night.

Look at MO tyres.

I put a set of Goodyear eagle f1 on my eclass not long ago and they changed the whole car. Sitting at motorway speeds all I hear now is wind noise and not road noise so I will be sticking with the Goodyear brand for my car.
