Hello-I have a number of quirks in my 1981 300D and I wondered if anyone could start me in the right direction. Just don't tell me to buy a new Benz! HA!

1) Heater starts hot then 1 to 2 minutes later goes cold, but not every time. Usually just cold. But sometimes hot at first again.

2) Battery drained to dead in matter of 3 hours this  afternoon after using A/C. When attempting to start, I noticed the A/C was left "on" when the car was shut down. What would cause my car to kill the battery in three hours? NOTE: lights were NOT on, I checked.

3) Electric antenna died--replaced it. About a year later, the antenna motor retracts when you shut off the car but then grinds and grinds as if it can't tell the antenna is completely retracted. This even wore my battery down one weekend. Strangely, if the car were off and I came back to the car, slamming the car door could make the antenna motor kick on again. Mechanic's solution: disconnected power to antenna. A lame solution if you ask me.

4) Car vibrates too much unless in Neutral. Mechanic solved it by replacing a mount of some sort (transmission?) under the car. Six months later, it's shaking again. Mechanic says the mount is fine this time. Has no idea what to do. Lame.

5) Rear window defrost doesn't work. Can I do this myself?

6) Bulb in instrument panel is so dim, I often can't tell if my headlights are on unless I touch the switch. Can this be replaced easily? I replaced the interior light and it made a WORLD of difference. Do lights just go dim on older Benzs?

Thanks for your input.

Hiya Dave

The first five items on your list, require further investigation, by a skilled technicion as there may be a number of reasons why these faults are occuring.

Item 6, check and make sure the light dimmer is in the fully on position. From memory I think its the button on the right on the instrument cluster. There is only two any way. One is for the millage trip meter, so the opposite one should adjust the brightness of the clock lights and the rest of dash\heater illumination bulbs. If the lights do not work or work intermittantly. Then the potentiometer requires replacment at the back of the clocks. The parts are about £12.00 fairly easy job to carry out.

Andy,

Thanks for your input. I do know about the brightness control knob. I check it often and it does work. I will check out the potentiometer front.
