I am a new owner of a 1988 500SL which needs new tyres. Can anyone suggest to me the best option?
My research suggests the Michelin Cross Climate but I am not certain how well they suit this particular vehicle.

Thank you
Rodney

It depends on what you expect of the car and wish to spend.
Certainly if you live where there may be snow in the inter and expect to drive the car then some form of winter tyre is the way to go.
To reduce cost cross climates are a good choice, they won't necessarily give the same grip as winter tyres in snow, but will be light years ahead of summer biased tyres tyres in snow. Just don't expect them to give as sharp a driving response to summer biased tyres. I've had Vredestein cross climate tyres fitted to my wife's car.
If money isn't so much of an issue (on initial outlay) and you want a sharper turning response, sportier feel in the summer then you'll need summer biased and winter tyres - I wouldn't dream of driving using summer tyres in snow - having a separate set of rims for them is best.

Michelin are certainly a good tyre but I haven't experience of their Cross Climates. If you're not an on point driver then they may well suit your driving style - I've used winter tyres in the summer at temperatures over 30C and although perfectly safe, suit a more relaxed driving style.

I'd be looking at Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance or Performance 2 (if you can get them in the size you need) - I can't see many R107 SL's being used in the winter and the below are excellent

I use the Performance 2 on my SLK in the summer and really rate them

Cross Climate on my friends VW Up are brilliant but of course it's a much smaller and lighter car.

What size wheels?

What's your priority? Handling, noise, ride, longevity, price.....
